Barnyard is a 3D animated 2006 comedy film co-produced by Nickelodeon Movies, O Entertainment and Omation Animation Studio.
Why It's Great[]
- The CGI animation is okay.
- The film has some top notch voice-acting from big time stars including Kevin James, Sam Elliot, Wanda Sykes, Courtney Cox, and Danny Glover as well as veteran actors Jeffrey Garcia, Cam Clarke, Tino Insana, Rob Paulsen, and Dom Irrera. They fit their roles perfectly.
- Otis develops quite well in the film. He starts off as a reckless cow not helping his father defend the barnyard and becomes a responsible heroic leader honoring Ben’s legacy while still being a fun party animal.
- It's not afraid to show fight and death in a family film. As Ben defends the chicken farm, he is murdered by a pack of coyotes and dies in Otis's arms.
- The movie conveys an emboldened message with Ben’s great moralistic phrase; "A strong man stands up for himself. A stronger man stands up for others."
- Dag manages to be an ultimately terrifying villain. He even has a point about how Otis would fail to be a protective leader since he’s goofing around all the time which gives him the malicious advantage to slaughter the chickens.
- Plenty of the supporting characters are quite likable and entertaining such as Ben, Daisy, Bessy, Miles, Etta, Pig, Freddy, Peck, Maddy and Farmer Buyer.
- While not considered a musical, the film provides a great soundtrack, including Sam Elliot's cover of "I Won't Back Down".
- The film is practically meme gold, with scenes like the pizza delivery, "there's a cow farm, you're gonna find cows outside", and of course Biggie Cheese.
- The film has a lot of funny scenes including when Otis and his friends go hill surfing, Otis fooling the mailman, Miles kicking the farmer when he catches them partying, the boy tipping scene, the police chase, and even the final fight scene.
- The scene where all the animals are grieving at Ben’s grave is quite emotional.
- The climax is very satisfying as Otis gets revenge on the coyotes with all of his friends joining the final fight.
- John Debney gives the film a very unique farm-themed score.
- The film has a ton of memorable quotes like “Milk me”, “He’s buying it”, “I got the sweet legs” and “There is a cow outside”.
- The Wild Mike and motorcycle scenes are awesome and very entertaining.
- The film has quite a few insane adult stuff like when the officer briefly talks about strip-searching and when Miles almost says the a-word to Otis before he talks to Ben.
