Pocahontas is a 1995 animated musical historical film loosely based on the life of the Native American woman Pocahontas. It portrays a fictionalized account of her historical encounter with Englishman John Smith and the Jamestown settlers who arrived from the Virginia Company. The film was produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures on June 16, 1995. It is the 33rd Disney animated feature film and the sixth film produced and released during the period known as the Disney Renaissance.


Plot[]

An English soldier and the daughter of an Algonquin chief share a romance when English colonists invade seventeenth-century Virginia.

Why It's Great[]

  1. Stunning animation, especially during the songs and the wind blowing through Pocahontas' hair.
  2. Amazing soundtrack and musical numbers, such as Savages and Colors of the Wind.
  3. Beautiful character designs with the Native Americans, especially with Pocahontas.
  4. Has some of its own creative adjustments to make the film more suitable for Disney’s target audience.
  5. Amazing voice acting.
  6. John Smith and Pocahontas share amazing chemistry.
  7. Governor Ratcliffe is an entertaining villain with an original motivation and the late David Ogden Stiers did a pretty good job voicing him.
  8. Pocahontas' pet raccoon, Meeko is adorable.
  9. Proper character and story development.
  10. It stays true to Pamunkey Indian culture.

Bad Qualities[]

  1. Due to changing a lot of things to make it more kid-friendly, the film doesn’t stay true to the actual historical event very well, and as such received controversy.
  2. Kocoum's death was way too shocking to be shown on a kids film.
  3. Not very accurate on how the real story goes like for instance Pocahontas was only a little girl in the real story.

The review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes reports that 55% of critics gave the film a positive review based on 56 reviews, with an average score of 5.91/10.

Box Office[]

Pocahontas earned over $346 million against a $55 million budget.
